On higher trim levels like the Style or R-Line, for example, you do get a striking LED light strip that runs across the entire front grille, which then meets the VW badge right in the middle, and looks great as it does so.

IQ.Light

All while many models can also feature Matrix LED technology, which not only looks incredibly sharp, as each headlight is made of many individual light segments.

These, in turn, can then "cut out" a shadow around a car coming towards you so you do not blind them.

All while the wheel arches are finished with black protective cladding, making the car look wider and more "planted" on the road as it does so as well in our view.

This is Taigo’s signature feature, though, as unlike a traditional SUV, which has a flat, boxy roof, the Taigo’s roof curves gently downwards towards the back.

As a result of this, this "coupe" silhouette makes the car look faster and more premium than a traditional SUV as a direct result.

Despite the sporty shape, though, here you get black or silver roof rails that come as standard, meaning you can still easily fit a roof box for family trips on it as well.

The inside of the Volkswagen Taigo, though, in our opinion, is where smart design really meets modern technology.

For instance, even though it is a compact car, its cabin to us feels airy and surprisingly premium, to be honest.

As a result, here is everything you need to know about sitting inside and what impressed us the most.

Our First Impressions

When you first open the door, you will notice that the Taigo just feels solid and well-put-together overall.

The driving position is also higher than a standard hatchback but lower than a full-sized SUV, giving you a great view of the road without feeling like you are climbing into a truck as you do so to get it we thought.

The Dashboard

The dashboard, though, has a clean, horizontal layout that makes the cabin feel wider in the process.

It also uses soft-touch materials on the upper sections as well, which gives it a much higher quality feel than many rivals that use hard plastics in this price range.

Then, depending on the model you go for, more on that shortly, you can even get decorative inserts in different colours to match the exterior.

Infotainment System and Driver Cluster

Technology is also obviously at the heart of the Taigo as well. For instance, here you won’t find any old-fashioned needles, but, instead:

Infotainment Usability, How Well Does It Work?

We know that nothing is more frustrating than a lagging screen or complicated menus when you are trying to concentrate on the road.

Fortunately, you will be glad to know that the Taigo strikes a brilliant balance between modern tech and old-school ease of use here we found.

The standard 8-inch screen is sharp and responsive, for instance, operating much like a modern smartphone with zero "lag."

If you then use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you will also be pleased to know the connection is wireless on most trims, and it connects automatically within seconds of you starting the engine - no more fumbling with cables every time you get in.

Crucially, the Taigo keeps things simple. Unlike some modern rivals that bury climate controls deep inside a touchscreen menu, the Taigo retains a separate, dedicated panel for your heating and air conditioning, which we love to see.

Features robust physical dials that are easy to adjust by feel alone, so you can keep your eyes on the road.

Style & R-Line

These upgrades to touch-sensitive sliders. While these look premium, they are backlit for night driving and offer haptic feedback, so you still "feel" the adjustment as you make it.

Digital Cockpit

As standard, you get an 8-inch digital screen behind the steering wheel.

This is all while the "Pro" version on the higher trims grows to 10.25 inches and can display your navigation map on it as well.

The Touchscreen

The central screen is also high-resolution and handles your radio, car settings, and phone apps too.

Wireless Connectivity

You also get wireless connectivity in the form of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, which both come as standard on most models, allowing you to use your phone's apps without needing a cable, which is another good feature we loved.

Front Seats

Then the front of your cabin is also very spacious, you will be glad to hear.

As here the seats are designed for long-distance comfort, with height adjustment for both you, the driver, and any passengers as well.

Then, on the R-Line model, you also get "Sports Comfort" seats, which provide you with that extra level of support to keep you firmly in place during tight country corners, especially.

Then moving to the back, despite the sloping "coupe" roof, Volkswagen has managed to keep plenty of space for your passengers in the back as well.

For instance, there is plenty of generous legroom for adults here, and most passengers will find they have ample headroom as a result, too.

You also get USB-C charging ports in the back here, which is another good feature that we loved, to help to keep your kids' tablets powered up on those long journeys as well.

Rear Visibility, Is the Coupe Shape Hard to Park?

One question we often get asked here at Sinclair Volkswagen is, "Does that sporty sloping roof make it hard to see out of the back?"

To be transparent, the rear window is narrower than you would find on the boxier T-Cross.

However, Volkswagen has engineered the car here to ensure this never becomes an issue during your daily drive or parking manoeuvres.

How they solved it:

Standard Sensors

Every single Taigo model comes with parking sensors front and rear as standard, for example.

The visual display on your dashboard clearly shows exactly how close you are to obstacles as well, meaning you don't need to rely solely on the rear window here to park.

The "Must-Have" Option

For total peace of mind, though, we highly recommend adding the Rear-View Camera.

It is one of the most affordable options on the list, but it provides you with a crystal-clear, wide-angle view of the bumper, making reversing into tight supermarket bays completely stress-free in our opinion.

Family Practicality, Is It Car-Seat Friendly?

If you are moving from a hatchback to an SUV for family reasons, the Taigo is designed to make the "school run" transition seamless.

For example, it isn't just about having space; it's about accessibility here. As the Taigo features ISOFIX points on the two outer rear seats (and the front passenger seat on certain specs), but the real benefit is in the detail.

Unlike some cars where the ISOFIX anchors are hidden behind fiddly zips or buried deep between seat cushions, the Taigo uses clearly exposed, plastic-capped mounting points.

Why Does This Matter?
Well, here you can click a car seat base in and out in seconds without fighting with the upholstery - a small detail that does save a lot of stress on a rainy morning!

The rear doors also open wide, giving you plenty of room to lean in and buckle up toddlers without straining your back, which we also really liked.

Suspension

The suspension is also set up for comfort, so it does a great job of soaking up bumps and potholes on our uneven British roads, all while the steering is light, which in turn makes the parking in tight supermarket spaces an utter breeze to deal with, but it also firms up nicely when you are driving faster, giving you plenty of confidence on the road as a result too, which we really liked.

Here is a closer look at the engines and gearboxes to help you pick the right one as well:

1.0-litre TSI (95hp / 110hp)

This is the "sweet spot" for most drivers in our opinion, and is the most popular choice for a reason.

It is a three-cylinder petrol engine that feels nippy around town and is surprisingly quiet.

If you mostly drive in the city, the 95HP version is perfectly fine.

However, if you spend time on the motorway or often carry a car full of passengers, we would recommend the 110HP version.

As here it has that little bit of extra power that makes joining fast-moving traffic much more relaxing, and it is still excellent on fuel.

1.5-litre TSI (150hp)

For those who want more "poke," this four-cylinder engine is the one to go for. It is smoother than the 1.0-litre and offers noticeably quicker overtaking power.

It also features clever technology that can shut down two of its cylinders when you are just cruising along, which helps to save petrol without you even noticing it happening. If you do a lot of long-distance driving, this is the most refined option.

Gearboxes, What Is Better, Manual or The Automatic?

You have two great choices here.

The manual gearbox (5 or 6-speed depending on the engine you choose, that is) is light, precise, and very easy to use - you won't get a tired left leg in traffic, for instance.

However, the DSG Automatic is brilliant in our opinion for those who just want stress-free commuting.

As it does a good job at shifting gears smoothly and instantly, making stop-start traffic much more bearable as a direct result.

It also pairs especially well with the optional Travel Assist system, which just gives you that effortless motorway cruising everybody wants as well.

One of the best things about the Taigo that we loved, though, is that it looks like a premium car, but it does not cost a fortune to run.

Instead, it sits on the same mechanical platform as the Volkswagen Polo, which is famous for being reliable and efficient.

Fuel Economy

For example, here you won't be visiting the petrol station too often with this car.

As the 1.0-litre TSI engine is excellent on fuel, and in the real world, you can expect to get around 50 to 52 MPG if you drive sensibly.

Then even the more powerful 1.5-litre engine is surprisingly fuel efficient, often managing over 45 MPG on a long run, thanks to clever technology that saves fuel when you are just cruising.

Insurance and Warranty

For your insurance and warranty, this is also reasonably cheap to insure compared to many other SUVs.

As here most of the Taigo's models sit in insurance groups 12 to 24, which really does help to keep your yearly premiums down due to this.

For that added peace of mind, every new Taigo also comes with Volkswagen’s standard 3-year / 60,000-mile warranty, so you are covered if anything unexpected happens as well.

Sinclair's Final Verdict: Is the VW Taigo Actually Right for You?

The Volkswagen Taigo, in our Sinclair Volkswagen's Technical Team's (based in South Wales) opinion, really is a clever car that fills a gap many drivers did not know existed.

It takes the dependable, easy-to-drive nature of a hatchback and just wraps it in a body that looks far more expensive and adventurous.

Why You Should Buy It

If you want a car that stands out in the car park but is "painless" to own, the Taigo is a winner in our view.

As here it offers you a massive boot (440 litres) that beats many larger cars, meaning you don't actually sacrifice much practicality for those stylish coupe looks.

It’s also packed full with safety tech and modern screens as standard, making it feel like a truly modern vehicle as well.

Things to Consider

While it looks sporty, it is designed for comfort and ease rather than racing.

If you want a "thrilling" drive, you might look at a CUPRA Formentor, as this has some very sharp handling and performance, but if you want a smooth, refined journey with low running costs, the Taigo is the better companion.

The rear visibility is also slightly narrower due to the stylish roof, but the standard parking sensors make this a minor issue in our view.

Our Recommendation

Go for the 1.0-litre 115hp engine, as it is the "Goldilocks" of the range - plenty of power for the motorway, but cheap to insure and great on fuel as well.
