SMART Car Service Guide, A vs B - What Is the Difference and What Does it Cost?

SMART Car Service Guide, A vs B - What Is the Difference and What Does it Cost?

Quick Guide Summary

A SMART car requires a Service A (Interim) every 12 months or 10,000 miles, and a Service B (Major) every 2 years or 20,000 miles.

For electric models (#1, #3, and #5), servicing focuses on high-voltage battery diagnostics, heat pump thermal management, and Over-The-Air (OTA) software audits to make sure that you are getting the maximum driving range and safety as a result.

SMART Car Servicing

Owning a SMART car, whether it is the classic Fortwo, the Forfour, or the new electric #1 #3 or #5 models, really is a brilliant way to navigate city life. However, even the most compact cars need regular maintenance to stay reliable.

Because these cars are built with precision engineering, ignoring small issues can lead to a breakdown or a failed MOT, just like any car.

As a result, without a professional check-up, a minor fault can quickly become a large repair bill down the line for you.

So, imagine the stress of your car failing to start on a busy morning, or facing an expensive fix that could have been avoided for a small cost months ago. As a poorly maintained SMART car loses its nimble performance and its resale value, and nobody wants a city car that just feels unsafe or unreliable.

The good news, though, is that keeping your car in its best condition is actually really straightforward. So much so that we have put together this guide to SMART car servicing to help you understand exactly what happens when you bring your vehicle to us.

From battery health checks for electric models to brake inspections, we will show you how to keep your SMART car running perfectly for years to come.

Why Regular Servicing Matters

SMART cars, as you will know, are clever, compact vehicles built with advanced technology. Because they are often used for short city trips with lots of "start-stop" driving, their engines and batteries work harder than you might expect.

Due to this, proper servicing is needed for a number of reasons here:

Protect Your Investment

A SMART car with a full service history is worth significantly more when you decide to sell or trade it in.

Safety First

We check your compact braking system and steering to ensure your car remains responsive and safe in tight city traffic.

Save on Energy

Whether you drive petrol or electric, a well-maintained car uses energy more efficiently, lowering your daily running costs.

Avoid Costly Repairs

Regular checks allow us to find small faults before they turn into expensive mechanical failures.

When Should You Book a Service?

Most SMART cars actually feature a digital service reminder on the dashboard that counts down until your next visit.

As a general rule, you should follow these intervals:

The Annual Check

Here you should book an interim service every 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first, as this makes sure that the essential components of your car are inspected regularly.

The Service B (Major)

Every 2 years or 20,000 miles, your car requires a major service.

During this visit, for instance, we replace the filters and fluids that keep the mechanical parts running smoothly and lots more than in the annual check.

Electric Health Check

For electric models, an annual check is required to monitor your battery health and the cooling systems that protect the vehicle's range and performance for you over the long term.

Our diagnostic report will also provide you with a State of Health (SOH) certificate, which is vital for protecting your 8-year battery warranty and increasing the resale value of your electric SMART car as well.

What Happens During a Service?

A large number of things can happen during your service, depending on which one you decide to go for, including, for instance:

The Motor & Battery

For petrol models, we change the oil and filters to keep the engine smooth.

Then for electric SMART cars, we will carry out a high-voltage battery diagnostic to ensure you are getting the best possible range and charging speed possible and that there are no signs of battery degradation occurring, which could be covered by your warranty.

Braking System

City driving, as you will know, also involves frequent braking.

As a result, we check your pads and discs for wear and tear, making sure that your stopping distances remain short and safe.

Tyres and Suspension

Because SMART cars have a short wheelbase, hitting a pothole can really affect the suspension more easily.

Due to this, we check your shock absorbers and also ensure that your tyres are wearing evenly to prevent steering issues as well.

The "Range Protectors", Your Heat Pump & Thermal Management

If you drive a SMART #1 or #3 (especially the Premium or BRABUS trims), your car likely has a heat pump.

As a result, unlike a normal heater that drains the battery to create warmth, a heat pump recycles waste heat from the motors to warm the cabin extending your battery as a result.

As a result, during your service, we check the refrigerant gas levels here and the coolant pumps.

If these systems are slightly off, your driving range in winter can drop significantly. Consequently, we make sure the "thermal management" is working perfectly so you get the most miles out of every charge.

On-Board Charger (OBC) & Port Inspection

Your On-Board Charger is the "brain" that converts electricity from your home wallbox into energy for the battery.

Due to this, if this part develops a fault, your car might charge slowly or not at all.

As a result, here we perform a high-voltage diagnostic on the OBC to look for "fault codes" (digital red flags).

We also physically inspect your charging port for corrosion or debris as well, as even a tiny bit of dirt in the socket can cause a "handshake" error with a public charger, leaving you stuck, which you never want.

Advanced Technical Diagnostics for Electric Models

During your service, we will also use specialised diagnostic tools to verify the "Health Data" of your car’s most expensive components.

For instance, this will tend to include:

Component Standard Specification Our Health Check Includes
High-Voltage Battery 66kWh (NCM) or 49kWh (LFP) State of Health (SOH) percentage check and cell balancing verification.
On-Board Charger (OBC) Up to 22kW AC / 150kW DC Thermal inspection of the charging pins and communication "handshake" testing.
Inverter & Motor 200kW (Single) / 315kW (Dual) Coolant flow rate analysis to prevent motor overheating during rapid acceleration.
Connectivity Hub OTA (Over-The-Air) System Verification of the latest software firmware to unlock new efficiency features.

Over-The-Air (OTA) Software & Digital Logs

The new generation of SMART #1 and #3 models are "Connected Cars."

This means they receive Over-The-Air (OTA) updates to improve everything from your 360° camera stability to your battery's winter range.

While these updates often happen at home via Wi-Fi, during your service, we also perform a Manual Software Audit as well.

Here, for instance, we check your car's internal logs to ensure that every critical safety and entertainment update has been successfully installed. If an update has "stalled" or failed in the background, we can force the latest official build onto the car's system for you.

Entertainment & Safety Systems

We also verify that your infotainment system and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are running the latest firmware, too.

This then makes sure that your navigation, Apple CarPlay / Android Auto, and emergency braking features are always as sharp and responsive as possible as an end result as well.

Essential Fluid Checks

Other checks here also include your fluids. For instance, here your car will have the following checked:

Fluid Type Purpose Interval
Brake Fluid Ensures your brakes respond instantly. Changed every 2 years.
Coolant Keeps the engine or electric battery at the right temperature. Checked every service.
Screenwash Keeps your windscreen clear for city visibility. Topped up every service.

The "Health Check" Video

We can also provide a Complimentary Electronic Vehicle Health Check (EVHC) as well.

Here, our technician will film a short video of your car’s underside, using a simple Traffic Light system:

  • Green, all good
  • Amber, we have found a part that is worn, and it will need replacing soon.
  • Red, needs immediate attention for your safety.

Then we will show you these as part of the video as well, so that you can see them for yourself.

Tips for Between Services

To help you keep your costs down between servicing, here you can:

Check Your Tyre Pressure

Small tyres are sensitive to pressure changes more than large tyres are. As a result, keeping them at the correct level actually improves your fuel economy, extends your battery life, and also means that each tyre also wears evenly as a well.

Maintain Your Battery

For electric models, you actually want to keep your battery charged between 20% and 80%. As this practice actually extends the overall lifespan of the battery cells, as you aren't over-stressing them to get a full charge, or letting them get too low as well, it is the ideal range to keep your battery at for its best long-term health.

Clean Your Sensors

You also want to wipe the external cameras and sensors regularly.

Here, dirt and road grime can stop the parking aids and safety systems from working correctly.

SMART Servicing Price Estimates

While every car is different, we want to give you a clear idea of what to expect.

Please note that prices can vary based on your specific model and its age, and over time as well.

But, as a rough guide, you can expect:

Service Type Estimated Cost (Petrol Models) Estimated Cost (Electric #1 & #3) What’s Included?
Service A (Interim) From £165 From £120 Oil/filter change or battery health check + safety inspection.
Service B (Major) From £295 From £210 Full fluid replacements, cabin filters, and deep system diagnostics.

How to Reset the SMART Car Service Light (Spanner Icon)

If a small spanner icon has appeared on your dashboard, your car’s "brain" is, in essence, telling you that a maintenance interval has been reached.

This light should ideally only be cleared after a professional service has been completed, you are not making sure any issues are identified, and the car is well-maintained.

Frequently Asked SMART Car Service Questions

When it comes to SMART car servicing, some frequent questions we get include, for instance:

How long does a SMART car service take?

For a standard Service A, it usually takes about 90 minutes to 2 hours.

A Service B (Major) can take 3 to 4 hours because our team performs a much deeper inspection.

However, you are welcome to wait in our lounge with a coffee and free Wi-Fi while we work.

How do I reset the service light?

On most modern SMART models, you can find the "Service" menu using your steering wheel buttons and hold the reset button.

However, we suggest only doing this once a professional has checked the car, as simply clearing the light does not fix the car, and it could lower your car's resale value if you don't have the paperwork to prove the work was done.

Will servicing at Sinclair Group protect my warranty?

Yes, as we only use "Genuine Parts" and follow the official manufacturer's schedule, which means your warranty stays valid due to this.

Common SMART MOT Failure Points, The "South Wales" Factor

In South Wales, our roads can be tough on small cars, especially.

Between those steep hills of the Valleys and the inevitable city potholes, SMART cars face specific challenges.

As a result, many owners ask us, "Will my SMART pass its MOT?" - Here is what our technicians usually find during testing to help you understand if it has a good chance or not.

Classic Models (Fortwo 451, 453 & Forfour)

If you drive one of the classic petrol or early electric models, keep an eye on these two frequent failure points:

Snapped Coil Springs

Because SMART cars have a short wheelbase and firm suspension, hitting a deep pothole in Cardiff or a speed bump in Swansea can cause the front coil springs to snap.

Often, you won’t even hear it happen because the spring stays seated, but it’s an instant MOT fail.

As a result, during your service, we physically inspect the integrity of every spring to make sure your suspension is safe and level.

Rear Number Plate Bulbs

The vibration from the rear-mounted engine in classic models can often shake these small bulbs loose or cause the delicate filaments to blow.

It is a "simple" fix, but a blown bulb is one of the most common reasons for a "Major" fail.

Due to this, we check these early in our health check, so a bulb does not result in an MOT failure for you.

New Generation (#1 & #3) Specifics

For the new electric models, we will also pay close attention to the Panoramic Glass and Tyre Shoulders.

Because EVs are heavier, city cornering can wear the edges of your tyres faster than the centre, for example.

Additionally, any chip in the driver's direct line of sight on that large windscreen can lead to a failed test as well.

New Generation (#1, #3 & #5 Models)

The new electric generation is built differently, leading to a new set of MOT focus areas:

Panoramic Windscreen Chips

The #1 and #3 features beautiful, large glass areas. However, a stone chip larger than 10mm in the driver’s "Line of Sight" (Zone A) will result in a failure.

Because the glass is so large, it’s more susceptible to road debris.

Tyre Shoulder Wear

Electric vehicles are heavier than petrol cars due to the 66kWh battery. If you frequently navigate tight city multi-storey car parks or roundabouts, the outer "shoulders" of your tyres can wear down faster than the middle.

Even if the middle looks deep, worn edges can fail an MOT.

Official SMART Servicing, Your Warranty & Your Rights

As an Official SMART Partner in South Wales, we offer a level of expertise that high-street garages simply cannot match.

In the UK, the Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Order (MVBEO) - formerly known as MVBER - is a law designed to protect you.

What does this mean for you?

You have the absolute right to choose where your SMART car is serviced. As long as the garage uses matching-quality parts and follows the official service schedule, your manufacturer's warranty remains 100% intact.

Why Choose a Main Dealer like Sinclair?

While the law allows you to go anywhere, there are three "Main Dealer" perks that an independent garage cannot provide you, including:

Software & Recalls

We automatically check for official SMART software updates and safety recalls every time you visit.

These are digital improvements and safety fixes provided directly by the factory - updates that independent garages often do not have the specialised access to see or install for you.

The Official Stamp

A full Sinclair SMART service history is widely considered the "Gold Standard" for resale value.

As a result, when it comes time to sell or trade in your car, buyers in the second-hand market specifically look for a Main Dealer stamp as proof that the car has been maintained to the highest possible standard.

Specialist Tooling

We use the exact diagnostic computers and software used by the factory in Germany itself.

This specialist equipment is actually needed for the complex electrical systems and battery management found in the new #1 and #3 models, making sure that your car’s "brain" is always functioning at its best.

While most independent garages use "Universal" diagnostic tools.

While these are great for reading basic engine codes, they often cannot communicate with the deeper "sub-systems" found in the new SMART #1 and #3.

As we use the exact equipment by SMART themselves to diagnosis issues, this "Direct Link" allows us to perform tasks that most local garages simply cannot, such as:

Software Patching

Just like a smartphone, your SMART car needs regular firmware updates to fix minor "bugs" or improve overall battery efficiency that came out after the car left the dealership.

As a Main Dealer, we have a direct digital link to the factory to install these official patches, ensuring your car’s range and performance stay as high as the day it was built.

Battery Cell Balancing

Our specialist tools go beyond a simple battery check; they can look at the individual cells within your 66kWh battery pack, for instance.

We also make sure that every cell is charging and discharging at the same rate.

This "balancing" is actually the secret to extending your battery’s total lifespan and preventing premature range loss.

Component Coding

In modern SMART models, parts are digitally "locked" to your specific vehicle for security.

As a result, if a component like a sensor or a light needs replacing, the car's computer must be "told" to accept the new part.

Our factory tools perform this "digital handshake" reliably, making sure that all your safety systems communicate without errors.

Serving the M4 Corridor & South Wales

From our official service centres in Cardiff and Swansea, we are perfectly positioned to look after SMART owners across the entire M4 corridor.

Whether you are commuting from Newport, living in Bridgend, or based in the South Wales Valleys, our expert team is your local choice for official maintenance.

As a family-run motor group with over 75 years of heritage as well in the region, we combine that technical power of a main dealer with the personal touch of a local business you can trust as a result as well, and we are more than proud of that too.
