BYD Servicing Guide, What's Needed and What Do You Need to Know?

So, you're thinking about getting your BYD serviced? Well, it's not just a box to tick to keep the car's value up or as part of your leasing deal, or just to keep your car in top condition.

It’s genuinely one of the best things you can do to keep your electric car running sweetly and safely on the road.

From a full safety check of the battery and braking systems to a more detailed inspection, we'll explain what our technicians check and why it matters to you.

The BYD Service Schedule

First things first, if you're used to petrol or diesel cars, you can forget about complex service schedules.

Servicing an electric car like a BYD is much more straightforward. It doesn't use a complicated system that monitors your driving style; it follows a clear, fixed schedule based on the time and mileage you have driven.

Typically, a BYD will need a service every 12 months or every 12,500 miles, whichever comes first. While your car is smart enough to display a reminder, it's always good practice to consult your owner's manual for the full details here.

As the manual also contains an emergency guide for what to do if a warning light appears before a service is due.

Then, if you also make a note of the service interval, it also makes the whole process predictable and accessible for you as well.

But your car is also clever enough to keep track of when it's due and will display a reminder on the dashboard when it's time for you to get booked in, in case you forget.

This then lets you:

Predict when your service is due

As you then know exactly when a service is due, making it easy to plan and budget for.

Get serviced faster

With no engine, there are far fewer fluids and filters to worry about, often making the service quicker and more affordable.

Protect your warranty.

Sticking to the schedule is essential for maintaining BYD's comprehensive warranty, especially the long warranty on the main battery.

So, in essence, when that service message appears, your car is ready for its annual health check, but what does that typically involve?

What is Covered in a BYD Service?

Here’s a rundown of the most common jobs that are carried out during a BYD service.

This is the core of the service, as here a trained technician will perform a multi-point inspection, focusing on the unique components of an EV.

Crucially, this means that you will get no oil change, no spark plugs, no fuel filters, and no exhaust check, which you may expect in petrol or diesel engine cars, as an EV simply doesn't have these.

Instead, here they will focus on:

High-Voltage System Inspection

This will tend to be a visual check of the bright orange high-voltage cables and connections for any signs of damage or wear, which is needed to keep the car safe.

Brake Inspection

They will check the condition of the brake pads, discs, and callipers for wear and corrosion.

Suspension and Steering Check

Inspect all the suspension and steering components for wear and tear, just like any other car.

Tyre Check and Rotation

Check the tyre pressures and tread depth, and the tyres are often rotated to ensure they wear evenly, extending their life.

Why does it matter?

This is all about making sure that the car continues to be safe and any preventative maintenance that is needed is noted before it becomes a problem, and decreasing your running costs down the line.

It also makes sure that the high-voltage electrical systems are all still in safe condition, that your brakes are in perfect working order, and it spots any issues like suspension wear before they become bigger problems as well.

This is a filter that cleans the air coming from the heating and air conditioning system into the cabin, and it is usually replaced at every service.

Why does it matter?

A fresh filter ensures you and your passengers are breathing clean air, free from dust, pollen, and pollution, and it also keeps your climate control system working efficiently as well.

A brake fluid service is based on time, not mileage. Here, just like a petrol car, your BYD will typically need a brake fluid change every two years.

What’s done?

The old brake fluid is completely drained from the system and replaced with new, manufacturer-approved fluid and the old brake fluid is then recycled appropriately as well.

Why does it matter?

Brake fluid absorbs water over time, which lowers its boiling point. In a heavy braking situation, this could cause the fluid to boil, leading to a soft pedal and reduced braking performance, so making sure this is maintained well is more than vital.

Your brakes are then checked at every service, but you’ll find they need replacing far less often than a petrol or diesel car tends to be due to the car's use of regenerative braking, as with an EV, the actual motor does a lot of the slowing down here over the brakes themselves.

What’s done?

The technician will measure the wear on your brake pads and discs and recommend replacement only when necessary.

Why does it matter?

This is where EVs have a big advantage over traditional fuel cars. Thanks to 'regenerative braking' (where the electric motor slows the car down and recharges the battery), the traditional physical brakes are used much less.

However, while they do last longer, they still need to be checked for corrosion or seizing from underuse to ensure they work perfectly when you need them. We should note.

A key part of modern EVs' maintenance is to make sure their complex electronic systems are performing at their best for you.

As a result, during a BYD service, a professional technician will connect your BYD to advanced diagnosis equipment to check this for you.

What’s done?

The technician performs a full system scan to check for any underlying issues, effectively troubleshooting any fault codes that may have been stored in the vehicle's memory.

This is also important when they will perform any required software updates, including potential remote updates that improve vehicle operation and performance.

Why does it matter?

These updates then make sure that your car benefits from the latest improvements in efficiency and functionality long after it leaves the factory, and the diagnostic checks also provide you with that secure feeling, knowing that the complex systems managing your battery and safety features are working exactly as they should - and any potential issues are resolved in a timely manner as well.

Battery Coolant

Your BYD's advanced Blade Battery has its own cooling system to keep it at the perfect temperature.

However, this coolant needs changing at a major service, perhaps every 4 years, to ensure that the battery longevity and optimal charging performance remain as you expect.

Drive Unit Fluid

The electric motor also has its own cooling/lubricating fluid that requires changing at set high-mileage intervals as well.

12V Battery Check

All EVs still have a small 12-volt battery to run the lights, wipers, and infotainment screen, and this can be tested during a service to make sure it's still healthy as well.

The Aftersales Network and Parts Availability

A key part of the long-term ownership experience is confidence in the brand’s aftersales capability. As a result, here BYD really has invested heavily in creating a strong European network to ensure that the availability of genuine parts for all maintenance and repair needs is readily available.

As a result, this is managed by a very in-depth logistics operation, which includes strategically located parts warehouses in Europe to guarantee an efficient supply of components when needed.

So, when you bring your car to a UK BYD dealer, we have access to a rapid delivery options for any parts that we don't keep to hand in our garage, making sure that whether it's a routine service part or a key component, there is a quick response for us to be able to get it to our workshops as a result.

Help and Warranties

As you know, the car market is a busy place, but BYD stands out by offering one of the longest warranties around.

This then just goes to show how well-built their cars are and that it is always a good idea to get your head around what the warranty covers, and your local dealer can give you all the details.

They can also chat to you about getting extra cover when needed (extended warranties) if you want peace of mind for a few more years to come as well.

What's more, here, every dealer has a team to look after you long after you've bought the car. So if our trained mechanic ever needs a hand with a tricky problem, they can get straight in touch with BYD's own experts, and these specialists have had a lot of training to sort out any issue, making sure you get the same top-notch service as well.

BYD Servicing in a Nutshell

As you can see, a BYD car servicing isn't as complex or mysterious as you may believe.

It’s a straightforward schedule of checks designed to ensure your car is safe, efficient, and reliable, and is far simpler and generally cheaper than servicing a petrol or diesel car can be.

So when the service reminder appears, don't ignore it.

It’s a key part of owning an EV, protecting you and your passengers and ensuring your car is always ready to build your dreams, mile after electric mile.
