But, Who is BYD?

BYD, which is short for "Build Your Dreams," is a leading Chinese EV manufacturer which was founded in 1995. As a result, BYD has rapidly grown from producing rechargeable batteries to becoming a global leader in EV cars and battery pack technology.

With its main mission being to create sustainable and eco-friendly transportation, BYD is one of the few automakers that designs and manufactures its own batteries, giving it a significant edge in being able to reduce the cost of its EVs and the efficiency it can get from them.

A key part of BYD’s modern identity when it comes to its latest designs, comes from its design studio, which has been led since 2016 by Wolfgang Egger - a German car design veteran with a résumé that includes prestigious brands such as both Audi and Alfa Romeo.

Consequently, Egger has brought a very cohesive and high-end touch to BYD’s vehicle designs, including the BYD Seal.

As a result of the above, BYD cars have started to become a very popular choice in the European market, as they can often be more cost-effectively positioned for cars from other manufacturers due to their more integrated approach on the whole, which gives you a good value premium car as a result.

Exterior Design

Moving to its exterior, the BYD Seal’s overall design here is a prime example of modern design elements, with some very nice looking aerodynamic lines and a very nice sporty flair.

Front

For instance, upfront, we found that from the moment we set eyes on the BYD Seal, you will notice its sleek, modern front fascia as we did.

It's what can only be called very slender headlights, which also give it a very confident presence on the road in our view, while its subtly contoured bonnet adds a hint of sporty style here as well.

It is also more than clear that just by looking at it, you can see the attention to detail that has gone into every line, making the front end both very stylish and a true head-turner when on the road as well.

Side Profile

Moving around to the side, the BYD Seal’s aerodynamic shape truly shines here.

What you get, for instance, is a very streamlined silhouette that is complemented nicely by some very nice smooth character lines that run across its body, creating, in our view, a well-balanced and very eye-catching look, as a result.

Its neatly integrated door handles, which you would tend to find on cars such as a Land Rover Velar or a Tesla Model Y, also add to its very clean, uncluttered appearance here, all while helping this EV to get the long-distance range it is becoming known for, as well.

Roofline

Looking at its roofline, this is also, in our view, very gracefully curved, with a good panoramic sunroof and glass roof that lends a nice touch of style here to the BYD Seal.

This also gently tapers towards the rear, which not only adds a sporty feel to its design but also helps you to reduce wind resistance and wind noise as well.

So, whether you are weaving through city streets or gliding along the motorway, the sleek roof design will help you feel like you are driving a very modern and practical car at the same time, in our opinion.

Rear

At the back, the BYD Seal also gives you a very tidy and distinctive rear section.

This is thanks to its bold rear lights that wrap around the sides, making sure that you are clearly visible, while the subtle spoiler lip adds just the right amount of flair to its design as well.

All in all, it is a look that perfectly matches the car’s overall aesthetic – one that is clean, confident, and unmistakably very contemporary in our view.

Wheels

Looking at its wheels also adds nicely to its stylish appeal, and the BYD Seal offers you a good choice of alloy wheel designs to choose from.

With striking shapes and premium finishes, these wheels don’t just look good – they also provide you with a smooth ride as they do so as well here.

Paint Colours

The BYD Seal also comes in a range of vibrant paint finishes, allowing you to pick a colour that best reflects your personality very nicely here.

From crisp blues and timeless whites to more vibrant greens and greys, there’s an option to suit every taste.

For instance, here you have the following options to choose from:

  • Ice blue
  • Atlantis grey
  • Polar white
  • Space black
  • Shadow green
  • Indigo grey

Interior Design

From the moment you settle into your BYD Seal, you will also notice a delightful combination of modern style, good build quality, comfort features, and user-friendly technology, like we did.

This is thanks to its high-quality materials and some very intuitive controls that all create a very inviting environment for both you as a driver and your passengers alike - so whether you are on a quick daily errand around town or on that longer weekend getaway, the Seal’s interior, including its seating arrangements, infotainment system, and practical boot space all will come in handy here for you.

Front Seats

For instance, this is more than noticeable in its front seats. Here, the BYD Seal’s front seats give you a pleasing balance of both comfort and support - making them ideal for both shorter commutes and longer journeys alike.

You will also find just the right level of cushioning to stay relaxed, yet in our testing, we found them to remain firm enough to keep you well-supported when cornering, especially as well.

Additionally, the seats feature a range of adjustment settings, which allow both you as the driver and your front passenger to find your perfect seating position really easily as well.

Rear Seats

Looking at the car's rear bench, this is also very surprisingly spacious for a saloon of this size, and it gives you plenty of legroom and headroom for both children and adult passengers alike here. Especially thanks to the ISOFix child seat points as well - making it a great option as a family car due to this.

The seatbacks are also contoured, which gives you a comfortable posture, and the seating position even gives your rear passengers a decent view out of the side windows as well.

Even on extended journeys, we thought that the rear seats proved themselves to be very accommodating and really helped to ensure that everyone on board could travel comfortably.

Upholstery

Moving on to the Seal’s interior, which is finished with high-quality materials that lend it a premium feel.

Here, for instance, you get soft-touch surfaces and carefully stitched seams, which do a good job of showcasing the car’s attention to detail.

So, you will notice how the fabrics have been carefully chosen for their durability, all while helping the cabin to keep its fresh appearance over time.

Plus, the subtle colour choices add a sense of understated style to the overall design here as well in our opinion.

For your interior styles, you also have 2 main ones to choose from, with these being in either:

  • Black
  • Tahiti Blue

Infotainment System

Looking at what is a very noticeable feature, at the heart of the dashboard, you will find a very generously sized and responsive 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system that can swivel either horizontally or placed positions vertically at the touch of a button - depending on how you want it at any given time.

The user interface here is also very intuitive we found, with easily navigable menus and responsive touch controls.

It also seamlessly has phone integration via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as well, so you can access your favourite apps, navigation tools, and media really in a snap, and the system’s sharp graphics and modern layout also give it a look that is as impressive as it functions.

Cluster and Head-Up Display

Another area that we really liked the look of is the Seal's digital instrument cluster, which not only gives you all the information that you need at a glance but can also easily customise what information you need from your speed, range, and driving modes to name only a couple here.

It is also designed to reduce how much distraction occurs as well by giving you the essential details you need at a glance.

For an even more convenient driving experience, the Seal Saloon can also come with a heads-up display, which will then project the key data that you will want to know directly onto your windscreen - allowing you to keep your eyes on the road while staying informed of your speed and navigation as you do so.

Boot Space

Practicality is also not forgotten in the BYD Seal’s boot and boot lid design as well.

For instance, here, the boot is spacious enough to accommodate the weekly shop, a pushchair, or a couple of suitcases for a weekend getaway with 40 litres of space with the rear seats up, going to 400 litres of space with the rear seats laid flat, for example.

The wide opening and relatively low-loading lip of the boot area also make it easy to slide in bulkier items as well.

Then, for those needing a bit more space, we found the rear seatbacks can be folded down easily to create additional room for longer loads as well.

Battery, Engine and Driving Range

Moving on to one of the most important aspects of an electric car is its Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery and electric power performance.

Here, the car really impressed us with its advanced powertrain and regenerative braking features, which can come in a Front-wheel-drive Boost model, Rear Wheel Drive Model (RWD), Four Wheel Drive (FWD) Excellence Model, and an All Wheel Drive version (AWD) configurations. That said, the engine only ever drives the front wheels, with the All-wheel Drive made available thanks to the electric motor, which is situated directly on the rear axle.

What BYD says about its Batteries

When it comes to its battery pack technology, BYD has said:

The space utilisation of the Blade Battery has been increased by over 50% compared with the traditional battery packs, which can then provide you with enhanced energy density and deliver a longer range.

Performance

For those that want to go for the high-end model, the Excellence-AWD trim we thought really shines through with a powerful dual-motor setup, generating 390 kW (530 PS) and an impressive 670 Nm of torque, giving you a very quick 0-62mph time of just 3.8 seconds.

Top Speed

With a top speed of 111 mph and multiple driving modes available as well, such as Sport and Snow, it really does give you a lot of flexibility and performance here.

Suspension System

The car's suspension system also features a double wishbone at the front and a multi-link rear with variable damping as well, which then helps to give you smooth handling and ride quality as much as possible, regardless of the road you are on.

All in all, this makes it a very compelling choice for those seeking power and efficiency, and it is one of the most advanced electric cars on the market today, in our view.

Comparable Cars

The BYD Seal clearly leads other similar cars in its class as well, in our opinion, especially when comparing its running costs to petrol engine cars, trim levels, ride quality, power, features, and available car leasing deals against key rivals.

Consequently, for either families or people looking for an executive car and considering any of the following, the BYD Seal should also be on your list for consideration.

Reliability

The new BYD Seal has also hit the market as being seen as a reliable EV car, and even though it is new to the block, it has already started picking up a huge array of awards, many of which take into consideration its reliability.

For instance, some of the awards it has won already include for example:

So Is the BYD Seal The Best Car For You?

As you can see, the BYD Seal really is a truly impressive electric vehicle that, in our opinion, will give you a great combination of performance, style, and practical features. This is further improved upon thanks to its stylish, aerodynamic design and advanced electric powertrain, making it not just a head-turner but also a car that feels great to drive at the same time.

Its smooth handling and brisk acceleration are also complemented well by a very generous range that knocks many of its competitors out of the water here, making it a reliable choice for both daily commutes and longer journeys.

Inside, as you can also see, the cabin is both very modern and thoughtfully designed; what we liked the most here are premium materials and cutting-edge tech features that blend well to improve the comfort and convenience this car can offer you.

All in all, the Seal, in our opinion, really does stand out as a great electric car at a really solid price point - especially when compared to other cars in its class. This is especially true if you are also buying this car for a business, as this will allow you to get some very low company car tax rates as well here with the Seal, thanks to its electric car status.

So, whether you are looking for an electric car upgrade, a good car all around, or a stylish electric sedan that ticks all the right boxes, the BYD Seal really does make a compelling case and one that really is hard to fault as well.
