Which Version Should You Buy?

Before looking at specific engines, interiors and more, you first need to know which generation of the car fits your budget.

While there are older versions, most buyers today look at the two most recent models, with these being:

The Mk3 (2013 – 2020)

Used Skoda Octavia's, such as the Mk3, are currently the "sweet spot" for used buyers.

It is modern, incredibly spacious, and very reliable, but it does offer you fewer features and the improved efficiencies of the newer models, though.

It looks sharp and angular, and if you are looking for a budget-friendly used car between, this is likely the one you will be looking at, as it just offers you excellent value for money overall.

The Mk4 (2020 – Present)

The Skoda Octavia Mk4, though, is the current model, and it does just look more stylish, along with having more features and a much higher-tech interior with fewer buttons and more touchscreens as well.

It also just feels slightly more premium, similar to an Audi or even a posh Volkswagen.

This is the choice if your budget is higher or if you want the latest hybrid technology.

Pro Tip: If you buy a Mk3, try to find a "facelift" model (sold from 2017 onwards), as you can spot these by the "split" headlights at the front.

That is because these cars have slightly better technology inside, like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, to name just two.

Under the Bonnet, The Engines

You may not actually know, but Skoda is actually part of the Volkswagen Group, so the Octavia uses very common, tried-and-tested engines, due to the support of the wider organisation.

For instance, here you actually have several options to choose from, including, for example:

Petrol (TSI)

If you do mostly town driving or low mileage (under 12,000 miles a year), you should consider buying a petrol car for a number of reasons, consisting primarily of:

1.0 TSI

Do not be put off by the small size, as here it is punchy enough for town driving and very cheap to run.

1.4 TSI / 1.5 TSI

These are the best all-rounders, though, in our opinion, as they are quiet, smooth, and have enough power to overtake safely on the motorway as well.

Diesel (TDI)

If you spend your life on the motorway, though, here for range diesel is still the king.

As a result, some of the engine options here you should consider in our view are:

1.6 TDI

These are very economical (you can easily get 60MPG), but they can feel a bit slow when the car is full of passengers. We should note.

2.0 TDI

If that is a concern, then the best choice for high-mileage drivers who want more power is the 2.0 TDI.

It is strong, fast, and also very excellent for towing a caravan or trailer as well.

Hybrid (iV)

However, did you know the new Octavias can also come with a hybrid engine?
These are actually found mostly on the newer Mk4 models, and this is a "Plug-in Hybrid."

As a result, it can drive on electric power alone for about 30 miles, which is great if you have a driveway to charge it and a short commute, but they do tend to be a little bit more expensive to buy than a standard fuel car, due to the second side of the engine on the whole.

Is it Safe for My Family? (NCAP & ISOFIX)

If you are buying an Octavia, there is a good chance you are carrying your most precious cargo - your family.

As a result of this, you will be glad to know that safety is where the Octavia truly excels, and it can also often outperform much more expensive luxury cars here as well, as we will see.

Euro NCAP Safety Rating

The Skoda Octavia has been awarded the maximum 5-Star Euro NCAP rating, which we liked to see, and you will be happy to note.

This applies to both the older Mk3 (tested 2013) and the newer Mk4 (tested 2019/2022) as well.

In fact, the newer model achieved a massive 88% score for Child Occupant Protection, making it one of the safest places for your children to be on UK roads as a result.

ISOFIX Locations (The 3-Seat Advantage)

This is where the Octavia, though, really does beat many of its rivals (like the Ford Focus,  Toyota Corolla Touring Sports, the Ford Focus Estate, or the Kia Ceed).

As depending on which model year you buy, you can fit more car seats than you might expect.

Mk3 Models (2013–2020)

On these models, you get two ISOFIX points located on the outer rear seats.

The anchor points are also clearly marked and easy to access, making clicking a seat base very simple.

Mk4 Models (2020–Present)

Most newer models also come with three ISOFIX points, and you get the standard two in the rear, plus an additional ISOFIX point on the front passenger seat.

This "3-seat" capability, though, is a game-changer for growing families, allowing you to carry a baby in the front (rear-facing) and two older children in the back effortlessly.

Exterior Design

For its design, the Skoda Octavia is designed to look smart and professional rather than flashy, in our opinion.

As a result, it will fit in just as well in a supermarket car park as it does outside a corporate office that is a fact.

Front

The front of the car, for example, is dominated by the classic Skoda grille, which features vertical black slats and a chrome surround.

Then, moving up to the bonnet, you will see a distinct "crease" line that runs right down to the badge.

However, if you are looking at a newer model (2020 onwards), over a used model, the headlights here are slimmer and use LED technology, which makes them very bright at night, especially.

Side Profile

Then from the side, the Octavia looks both long and stylish here.

For instance, there is a sharp line (often called a "Tornado line") that runs all the way from the headlights to your rear lights, giving the car a strong and sturdy appearance as a result.

The doors are also large, which we really like, making it easy to get in and out, and the windows will provide you with good visibility for the driver as well we should note here.

Roofline (Hatch vs Estate)

Now this depends on which version you decide to go for, for example:

The Hatchback

This version has a sporty, sloping roofline, which curves gently downwards towards the boot - making the car look almost like a coupe or a saloon, to be frank - if you are looking for style, then this is your more stylish choice.

The Estate

The roof on the Estate then stays flat all the way to the back of the car.

While it looks a bit boxier than the hatchback version, this flat roof is the secret to its massive boot space, as it does not cut into the luggage area and just increases your capacity here a lot.

Interior Design and Practicality

In our view, though, this is where the Octavia truly shines.

As here this is not just a car; it is a mobile office and a family living room rolled into one in our view.

With the focus here being on easy to use and space - which we noted very quickly.

First Impressions

For example, when you first open the door, the car just feels incredibly solid.

It does not feel cheap or flimsy, for example, and the materials are soft to the touch in all the important places, while the design is clean and uncluttered.

Overall, it just feels much more expensive than the price tag suggests, often rivalling the posh German brands for quality. We should note here.

Front Dashboard

The dashboard is also designed in layers, using different materials like fabric or suede on the higher trim levels.

Overall, it is quite minimalist, meaning there are not hundreds of confusing buttons to deal with, and in the newer models from 2020 onwards, almost everything is controlled via the central screen, which makes the cabin just look very tidy, and match that of a Tesla cabin easily.

Columbus Infotainment System and Driver Cluster

In the centre of the dashboard sits a large touchscreen, which controls your radio, sat-nav, and car settings.

It is also bright and responds quickly to your touch, much like a tablet does.

Then, instead of old-fashioned dials for speed and revs, most modern Octavias now come with a "Virtual Cockpit."

This is actually a digital screen behind the steering wheel that you can customise. For instance, you can have a traditional speedometer, or you can fill the whole screen with a map so you do not have to look away from the road - which is a nice feature to have.

Technology

Moving to the car's in-cabin tech, here even basic models come with smart features.

For instance, you usually get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, allowing you to plug your phone in and use your own apps like Google Maps and Spotify on the car's screen directly, which is nice to see, especially at this price point.

Many models also have wireless charging pads as well, so you do not need messy cables trailing everywhere, as a result, to keep your devices charged, which is nice.

Storage Options

Skoda is also famous for its "Simply Clever" features, too, and the Octavia is no different.

For instance, here you will find massive door bins that can hold big 1.5-litre water bottles, and there is also a handy storage box under the central armrest as well, along with a holder for your parking ticket on the windscreen, and even an umbrella hidden inside the driver's door - just like you would get on a Rolls-Royce.

Comfort Features

We also noted very early on as well, that the car is just built to be relaxing, which we really like.

As here the suspension just soaks up potholes and bumps very well, and on the motorway, it is quiet, with very little wind or tyre noise making its way into the cabin.

You also get Dual-zone climate control as standard on most models, allowing both the driver and passenger to set different temperatures, which is a nice feature to see at this level as well.

Ambient Lighting

You also have the option to change the mood inside the car with some very nice LED ambient lighting.

There is a wide choice of colours to choose from here, all using the central screen, lighting up the dashboard, doors, and footwells really easily.

The vRS, The British Favourite

At this point in the buyer's guide, we must mention the vRS.

As here in the UK, this is a cult car.

It uses the same engine as the VW Golf GTI, but it also puts it in a very practical family body as it does so.

It is also fast, but it is not uncomfortable or loud either, and you can drive your children to school in comfort, and then have some fun on a B-road on the way home.

We should also note that for your engines, it is available in both petrol (very fast) and diesel (fast but economical).

So, if you want one car to do absolutely everything, the Octavia vRS Estate is often called "the only car you ever need."
