Exterior Design

When you first lay eyes on the Mercedes EQA as we did, you will notice it does not try too hard to look like a "car of the future."

It takes the familiar, muscular shape of the petrol GLA and smooths it out for the electric age.

For instance, here you get a real compact SUV that just feels substantial on the road, as it offers you that raised driving position we all love without being so big that you can not fit it through a narrow lane in the Valleys, for example.

First Thoughts

For our first thoughts, here you are getting one very handsome bit of kit.

While some electric cars look a bit like melted bars of soap, the EQA really does have proper lines and a premium "heft" to it as well, we thought.

For example, it is sophisticated enough for a business meeting in Cardiff Bay, but still rugged enough to look right at home parked up near the Brecon Beacons as well, and that is easy to say.

Front

The face of the car, though, is where you really see the "EQ" identity.

For example, here, instead of a traditional radiator grille, you get a massive, black panel radiator grille that looks incredibly stylish.

The headlights are then joined by a continuous LED light strip as well, right across the top, which gives the car a very wide, modern stance - especially at night.

So much so that it does look expensive, which, let’s be honest, is exactly what you want from your Mercedes.

Side Profile

From the side, the EQA looks athletic here as well.

There are fewer sharp creases than on older models, as Mercedes has gone for "sensual purity" - basically, it’s smoother to help the car cut through the wind and to help you increase the range you get, as a result, the battery needs to work less to get you the same distance.

The doors also open nice and wide, too, making it easy to hop in and out and especially put in any child seat as to the ISOFIX points easily enough as well.

Interior and Practicality

When you first climb into the EQA, you would be forgiven for thinking you have accidentally sat in an EQS-Class.

As here in our expert view, it does not feel like an "entry-level" car at all. For example, while the Audi Q4 e-tron or Tesla Model Y can offer a more minimalist, 'tech-first' cabin, the EQA is more designed for those who prefer that tactile luxury and classic ergonomics of a traditional Mercedes.

For example, the first thing that hits you is the sheer quality of the materials - for instance, there is a lovely mix of soft-touch plastics, brushed aluminium, and that classic Mercedes solidness.

Even the way the door shuts with a reassuring "thump" tells you this car was built to last, and it manages to feel incredibly modern and high-tech without being cold or intimidating in the process, in our opinion.

So, if you are coming from a petrol car, everything is exactly where you would expect it to be, but it’s all been given a premium, digital-first makeover that makes every journey feel a bit more special.

The Dashboard and Tech

Then, when you step inside, you will immediately see why people pay the premium for a Mercedes.

The dashboard, for instance, is just dominated by the "Widescreen Cockpit" - a pair of 10.25-inch digital displays that look like one seamless piece of glass.

It is also powered by the MBUX system as well, which is good to see at this price point, which is fancy talk for a car that learns your habits.

If you usually call your Nan on your way home to Neath at 5 PM, the car will eventually suggest it for you on the screen as a recommended option when that time comes around, for instance.

The air vents are also shaped like turbine engines as well, and feel solid to the touch which is very nice, and the 64-colour ambient lighting system can also make the cabin feel like a high-end lounge as well in our view.

Seating and Comfort

The front seats for comfort and support really are superb, offering you plenty of support for your back on those longer trips up the A470, for example.

If you go for the AMG Line, you also get some sporty seats trimmed in Artico man-made leather and Dinamica microfibre (which feels a bit like suede).

They are also heated as standard, which is a godsend on a frosty Welsh morning, and if you sit quite high up, it also gives you that commanding "King of the Road" view too, which makes SUVs just so popular.

Personalisation

Then why not turn the EQA into your very own Mercedes-Benz by personalising driving modes, radio stations, ambient lighting, and much more.

Your personal settings can be saved in up to seven different profiles, making the transition between different drivers in the family as smooth as possible.

Artificial Intelligence

Thanks to artificial intelligence, your MBUX system is also able to learn and adapt over time. It will be able to predict your personal habits, such as suggesting navigation for frequently-driven routes or automatically tuning to the radio station you like to listen to on your way home from work.

Performance & Practicality

On the road, we found the EQA to be silent and serene.

The EQA 250+ offers a range that genuinely kills off "range anxiety" for most drivers across the UK.

For instance, with a real-world capability of nearly 300 miles in the right conditions, you can get from Cardiff to Holyhead with just one short coffee break, which lets face it, you would do anyway.

Battery Options and Range

The EQA comes with two main battery sizes to choose from, with the most popular choice being the EQA 250+, which uses a 70.5 kWh battery.

On paper, this gives you a range of up to 346 miles. In the real world, especially with our Welsh hills and winter weather, which will put any fuel efficiency to its test, you can safely expect about 250 to 280 miles on a full charge.

However, if you go for the more powerful 4MATIC (all-wheel drive) models, they use a slightly smaller 66.5 kWh battery, which brings the range down to around 220–240 miles in exchange for better grip and that extra "poke" off the line, which consumes more power to do so.

Model Comparison

Regenerative Braking

However, one of the cleverest bits of the EQA is how it saves energy.

As here you have got paddles behind the steering wheel, but they are not for changing gears.

Instead, they control the "regenerative braking."

Click the left paddle, for instance, and the car will slow itself down more aggressively when you lift off the accelerator, pumping that wasted energy back into the battery.

So much so that it is a great way to eke out a few extra miles when you're heading down a long mountain pass.

Winter Driving, How Intelligent is the EQA's Efficiency as Standard?

One of the most common questions we hear in our Cardiff and Swansea showrooms is: "How does the EQA handle a frosty Welsh winter?"

It’s a great question, and the answer lies in the engineering Mercedes-Benz has packed under the skin.

So let's take a deeper look to find out.

The Magic of the Heat Pump

While many electric SUVs treat cabin heating like a high-energy toaster - draining your battery just to keep your toes warm - the EQA is much smarter. Every new EQA comes equipped with an advanced Heat Pump as standard.

This clever system acts like a "thermal scavenger", which is the best way to put it.

For instance, it harvests waste heat from the electric motors and the battery, as well as warmth from the outside air, to heat the cabin.

Because it’s recycling energy rather than just "burning" it, the system is incredibly efficient, which means that even on a crisp morning drive through the Valleys, more of your battery’s power stays where it belongs - on the road.

AMG Line Executive

If you want your EQA to look a bit more "street-smart," this is the one.

As it adds the iconic AMG body styling, including more aggressive bumpers and a star-pattern grille.

Inside, you also get sports seats and a multifunction sports steering wheel wrapped in Nappa leather.

All while it keeps the same high-tech interior but adds that sporty edge that looks great parked up in the city.

AMG Line Premium

This is where things start to feel properly luxurious, though.

As the wheels go up to 19-inch AMG alloys, and you get the KEYLESS-GO package, which means you never have to faff with your keys again.

The big upgrades here, though, are the Advanced Sound System and wireless phone charging, plus Augmented Reality for the navigation, which overlays direction arrows onto a live camera feed of the road ahead.

AMG Line Premium Plus

This is the "treat yourself" trim.

It comes with massive 20-inch black AMG wheels and a panoramic glass sunroof that floods the cabin with light.

You also get a Head-up Display, so you can see your speed and directions without taking your eyes off the road, and the top-tier Burmester® surround sound system.

It even features adjustable damping suspension, letting you choose between a softer or sportier ride at the touch of a button.

The "Urban Edition"

Occasionally available as a special edition, this trim often focuses on a stealthier look with blacked-out exterior accents and unique alloy wheels, perfect for those who want a more modern, "night-package" aesthetic without going all the way to the top-spec price tag.

Safety and Ownership

Here, Mercedes has a reputation for building tanks, and the EQA is no different.

For instance, did you know that it originally launched with a full five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, and for 2026, it’s packed with even more "Active" tech to keep you out of trouble.

As standard, you get Active Brake Assist (which can stop the car if a pedestrian steps out) and Active Lane Keeping Assist (which gently nudges you back if you drift).

There’s also a driver monitoring camera that keeps an eye on you to make sure you aren't getting drowsy on a long trek home from North Wales.

Ownership Costs and Tax

While electric cars used to be "tax-free," as of 2025/2026, the rules have changed.

You will now have to pay a small amount of annual Road Tax (VED), currently around £195 a year for most.

However, if you’re a company car driver, the EQA is still a massive win, as the Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) rate is incredibly low (around 3%), which could save you hundreds of pounds a month compared to a petrol GLA.

For your insurance-wise, it usually sits around group 38, which is about right for a premium German SUV, we must note.

Servicing and Warranty

One of the best things about the EQA, though, is how little maintenance it needs.

There’s no oil to change, no spark plugs, and no exhaust to rust away.

Your service intervals are typically every 12 months or 15,500 miles - whichever comes first- and Mercedes offers a three-year unlimited mileage warranty on the car itself.

Road Tax (VED) & Savings

Most electric SUVs registered after April 2025 now contribute to road tax. However, thanks to the 2025 Budget, the "Expensive Car Supplement" threshold for zero-emission vehicles has been raised to £50,000.

This is a major win for EQA drivers in South Wales. While petrol or hybrid cars over £40,000 are hit with an extra £425 annual surcharge, most EQA models stay comfortably under the new £50,000 limit - saving you over £2,100 in tax over five years, compared to a traditional luxury SUV we must note.

But the best bit is the battery warranty, as you are covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles, giving you total peace of mind that the most expensive part of the car is protected.

Audio & Infotainment

For the ultimate listening experience, the optional Burmester® Surround Sound System also transforms your EQA cabin into a world-class concert hall.

As here, this premium setup is engineered specifically for the unique acoustics of the EQA's interior.

System Output

The system is powered by a high-performance external Class-D DSP amplifier delivering a massive 710 watts of total output.

Loudspeaker Configuration

A total of 12 high-performance speakers are strategically placed throughout the cabin:

• 1 premium central midrange speaker in the dashboard.
• 4 mid-bass speakers (one in each door).
• 4 tweeters located in the front mirror triangles and rear doors.
• 2 surround midrange speakers in the rear C-pillars.
• 1 dedicated 60W subwoofer located in the rear area for deep, punchy bass.

It subtly and automatically adjusts the audio settings in real-time to ensure your music remains crystal clear, whether you are crawling through Cardiff traffic or cruising at 70 mph on the M4.

Sound Personalisation

Includes an interactive setup assistant that helps you create a custom sound profile based on your personal listening preferences, which can then be saved to your MBUX user profile.

Mercedes GLA Sinclair Final Verdict

As you can see, the Mercedes EQA really is the perfect "bridge" car.

It doesn't feel like a science experiment; it feels like a luxury SUV.

While it isn't the most spacious in the back for tall passengers, and the boot is slightly compromised by the battery, it more than makes up for it with interior quality and ease of use.
