What’s New for the 2025 onwards model of Hyundai i30?

The i30 has always been a solid choice, but the latest version just feels more "premium" than versions before in our opinion.

For instance, here Hyundai has not just changed the badge; they have refined the details a lot, in a number of areas, such as.

The Exterior

The first thing you will notice, as we did, is the new face.

The front grille now has a 3D pattern that looks much more modern, which in turn is then flanked by some very nice and slimmer LED headlights.

Then on the higher trims, you also get V-shaped Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) that give the car a real "Signature" look in your rear-view mirror.

The Interior

Inside, things have also become much more high-tech.

As here the old analogue dials are gone on most models, and have been replaced by a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display.

While in the middle of the dashboard sits another 10.25-inch touchscreen that handles all your music, maps, and car settings as well in an easy to use system.

The Exterior, A Sharper, More Modern Look

When we first saw the new Hyundai i30, it was clear that Hyundai did not want to reinvent the wheel here - they just wanted to make it look much more polished.

For instance, it has a "grown-up" feel to it, we thought, that sits somewhere between a sporty hatchback and a premium executive car, and we kind of like that with this car.

Our First Thoughts

Our initial impression is one of quality; we have to admit it.

While some rivals, such as the Ford Focus or even a Toyota Corolla for that, can look a bit "plastic-heavy," the i30, on the otherhand does look solid and well-proportioned, we thought.

For example, here it has a wide, low stance that just makes it look like it is hugging the road, which in turn gives you a sense of safety and stability before you even get inside.

Front

The "face" of the car has seen the biggest change over the prior generation as well.

As there is a new, wide radiator grille with a clever 3D pattern that really does catch the light beautifully in our view.

The LED headlights are also now much slimmer and sharper too, which is good to see. While on higher trims, the Daytime Running Lights are shaped like a "V," making the car look very modern and easy to spot in traffic.

Side Profile

From the side, the i30 then looks very stylish and "fast" even when it’s parked.

For instance, here there is a sharp character line that runs all the way from the front headlights to the rear lights, which really does help the car look longer and more elegant as it does so.

Overall, it is just a clean design without too many fussy bits, meaning it is easy to keep clean and won't look dated in a few years.

Roofline

The roofline is also designed to be aerodynamic to help with fuel efficiency as well, but Hyundai has been clever.

Unlike some "coupe-style" cars, where the roof drops down quickly, the i30 stays relatively flat. This is great news for your passengers because it means there is plenty of headroom in the back, and it makes getting a child seat in and out much easier as well.

Rear

Then, at the back of the i30, the bumper has been noticeably redesigned with a new "wing" shape that makes the car look wider.

As here the LED rear combination lamps have a high-tech glow, and the hidden exhaust tip just does a great job at keeping everything looking neat and tidy.

If you go for the N Line, you get a visible twin-muffler exhaust, which adds to the sporty "growl."

Here, Hyundai offers you a great mix of classic and bold colours.

You can stick with the more sophisticated Abyss Black or Atlas White if you wish, but we do highly recommend looking at the newer shades like Jupiter Grey or the striking Meta Blue as well.

Then, for those who want to stand out on the Welsh roads, the signature Engine Red is always a popular choice too here.

The Interior, Does Comfort Meet Technology Well?

As you have seen with the outside of the new i30, it is sharp and modern, and the inside is where you will spend all your time.

Hyundai has clearly focused on making the cabin feel like a calm, high-tech space that is easy to use every single day, that is for sure.

First Thoughts

When you sit in the driver’s seat, the first thing you notice is how solid everything just feels.

There are no "creaks" or "rattles." The layout is also very sensible; you do not have to go hunting through menus just to change the temperature, as you do on cars such as the newest Tesla, which is a big plus for safety while driving, in our view, as it means that you keep your eyes on the road, rather than trying to work out how to remain cool.

Dashboard

The dashboard we really liked as it is a clean, horizontal design that makes the cabin feel wide and airy.

Hyundai has clearly used plenty of soft-touch materials on the top of the dashboard as well, which is another plus, and it just feels much more premium than some rivals like the Ford Focus, which uses harder, scratchier plastics in places you touch often for example.

Infotainment System and Driver Cluster

Then dominating the dash is a crisp 10.25-inch touchscreen.

It is very fast and works just like your smartphone does, so it should be very easy to pick up, and the system even stays fresh over time automatically for you with Over-the-Air (OTA) updates, so your maps are always current.

Behind the steering wheel, you get a digital driver’s cluster that replaces old-fashioned needles.

Then it can even change colour depending on your driving mode - blue for 'Normal' and a sporty red for 'Sport' mode, for instance.

The Infotainment "Pro-Tip", Wired vs. Wireless

One of the most common questions we get at Sinclair Hyundai is about smartphone connectivity. Interestingly, there is a small "quirk" in the i30 range that catches many buyers by surprise.

Understanding Your Connection

While the Advance trim (with the 8-inch screen) often supports wireless Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™, the larger, more powerful 10.25-inch touchscreen found in the Premium and N Line models usually requires a wired connection.

The good news is that even though you might be "plugged in" for your maps, the Premium and N Line trims still feature a wireless charging pad.

Front Seats

The seats are then designed for long-distance comfort, which is clear. In the Advance trim, for example, they are supportive and hard-wearing.

But, if you then move up to the N Line, you get sports seats with extra "bolstering" to hold you in place around corners.

While on the Premium and N Line S trims, the seats are even heated - perfect for those chilly Welsh mornings.

There is plenty of room in the back for two tall adults or three children, as well, which is good to see.

Then, because the i30 hatchback has a relatively flat roof, your passengers won't feel "hemmed in", either.

There is also a fold-down armrest in the middle with cup holders, which is great for keeping the kids happy on longer trips, too, we thought.

Comfort

The i30 overall is also a very quiet car to travel in.

As here Hyundai has added extra insulation to keep road and wind noise out of the cabin.

This, then, when combined with the smooth "Mild Hybrid" engine, just makes for a very relaxing environment, whether you are nipping into town or driving across the country, that is.

Storage

You will also find plenty of spots for your "bits and bobs", as well.

For instance, here there is a large glovebox, a deep storage bin under the central armrest, and door pockets that are big enough for a one-litre water bottle for sure.

There is also a dedicated space for your sunglasses near the interior lights, too, which we liked.

Technology

For your interior tech, here the i30 is packed with "invisible" tech.

You get wireless phone charging, so you can just drop your phone on the pad to top up the battery.

It also features Bluelink, which lets you use your phone to check if the car is locked or even defrost the windscreen from your breakfast table before you leave the house, as well as other remote features.

The wireless charging tray, conveniently located in the centre console, lets you easily charge a compatible Qi-enabled smartphone without cables.

USB Type-C charging ports

There are three convenient USB Type-C ports for charging mobile devices in the new i30: one at the front and two for the rear passengers.

Its Engine and Performance

Every new i30 now also comes with electrified power. Specifically, it uses a 1.5-litre T-GDi engine with 48V Mild Hybrid technology, which even uses regenerative braking to harvest energy usually lost during slowing down.

The new i30's 1.5-litre T-GDi engine with 48V Mild Hybrid technology, for instance, produces 140PS of power, which is the perfect amount of power for a car this size.

It feels "punchy" when you need to overtake, but it is mostly designed to be quiet and save you money on petrol, especially for city driving.

How it works?

You do not need to plug this car in, you will be glad to hear.

As you get a small supporting battery and a starter-generator that then helps your engine out.

Then, when you are slowing down, the car captures energy. When you pull away, it then uses that energy to give the engine a little "boost."

Which, in turn, helps you save money on petrol, but keeps your costs of buying it down substantially as you aren't paying for a fully electric car that has a large, expensive battery underneath it.

Gearbox Types - Manual vs Automatic

You can choose between a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT automatic. The manual is great for those who like to feel connected to the car, but the automatic is incredibly smooth.

It is also particularly clever in "Eco" mode as well, where it can actually decouple the engine when you lift off the throttle to let the car "coast" to save your fuel as it does so.

This is then great if you like to feel in control and enjoy a traditional drive.

It is precise, easy to use, and perfect for those who prefer a more "involved" driving experience on local Welsh roads.

A dual-clutch automatic that makes traffic jams much less stressful is available, too.

It shifts gears incredibly quickly and smoothly, helping to improve your fuel efficiency while taking the hard work out of stop-start city driving as it does so.

Around Town

In the city, the i30 we found especially is a dream to drive.

The steering is light, making it easy to steer into tight parking spots at the supermarket, especially well. But, because every model comes with a reversing camera and parking sensors as standard, you will never have to worry about those tricky narrow gaps again - features we really like to see included at this price point.

On the Motorway

This is where the i30 really shines as a "cruiser", though.

As an instance, here it just feels very stable at 70 MPH, and there is very little wind noise, so you can still have a conversation without raising your voice.

The suspension we thought also does a great job of soaking up the bumps on the M4, making long journeys feel much shorter as a result.

Sporty Handling (N Line)

If you enjoy a bit more "zip", though, then the N Line models have slightly different tuning.

While it’s still comfortable, the steering feels a bit sharper, and the car stays flatter through the corners.

It’s not a racing car for sure, but it certainly feels more agile and fun on a twisty A-road in our expert opinion.

How the 1.5L MHEV Compares, Performance vs. "Real-World Feel"

If you have driven previous versions of the i30, you might be familiar with the older 1.4-litre or the smaller 1.0-litre turbo engines.

While some of those older units had high "raw" horsepower figures on paper, the new 1.5-litre T-GDi with 48V Mild Hybrid technology offers you a much more sophisticated performance feel in everyday driving here.

So much so, that it provides you with an instant electric nudge the moment you touch the accelerator, smoothing out the transition and making the car feel much more responsive and "punchy" from a standstill than the older 1.4L ever did.

While the 1.5L engine is focused on efficiency, it actually feels like it is "working less" than the old 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine did we thought.

Because here you have more displacement and electric assistance, the car does not need to hunt for gears or rev as highly to get you up to speed on a steep Welsh A-road.

The result, in our view, is a quieter cabin and a drive that feels "grown-up" and effortless, proving that how a car uses its power is often more important than the numbers on a spec sheet as a result.

How the i30 Handles Wales, From the Valleys to the M4, The Brecon Beacons and More

National car reviews often test vehicles on flat, southern English test tracks.

But here in Wales, we have those "real-world" conditions - steep valley climbs, narrow B-roads with the occasional pothole, and the ever-changing speed limits of the M4.

As a result, there is nothing better to test a car's performance than here in Wales, so here is how the i30 specifically tackles our more local terrain:

This is where the i30’s Smart Cruise Control (SCC) becomes your best friend.

Unlike old-fashioned cruise control, this system uses radar to maintain a safe gap from the car in front.

If the traffic then slows for a 50mph zone near Port Talbot, the i30 will automatically adjust its speed to match the flow without you ever touching the pedals.

It takes the stress out of those long motorway stretches, keeping you relaxed and within the legal limits.

And here the i30 comes with the "SmartSense" package, which uses cameras and sensors to keep an eye on everything around you.

Lane Keeping and Following Assist

On the motorway, the car can gently nudge the steering wheel to keep you right in the centre of your lane.

It is not "self-driving," but it takes the stress out of staying in lane during long, tiring trips.

Rear Occupant Alert (ROA)

This is a brilliant feature for busy parents or pet owners. The car remembers if you opened the back doors before you started your journey. When you reach your destination and turn off the engine, a message pops up on the dashboard to remind you to "check the rear seats," making sure nothing - and no one - is accidentally left behind.

Standard cruise control usually just holds a set speed, but this system is much smarter. It uses the car's built-in sat-nav to look at the road ahead. As here you get 395 litres of space with the seats up, which is more than you get in a Volkswagen Golf.

It is a very "square" and usable shape, making it easy to slide in a pushchair or a big weekly shop too.

Then, if you need to head to the tip or move some furniture, you can fold the back seats down to open up a massive 1,301 litres of room for you for those weekend tip days.

The Real-World Boot Test, What Actually Fits?

On paper, the Hyundai i30 has a 395-litre boot, which officially beats the Volkswagen Golf (381 litres).

But what does that look like when you're standing in a rain-soaked supermarket car park in Wales?

In our view, while the Golf is a close rival, the i30 features built-in shopping hooks and tethering points as standard.

These small details mean your groceries won't be rolling around the boot when you are taking the corners on a twisty Welsh A-road.

Rear Seats

The back of the i30 is a very comfortable place to be, we found, and with standard, it has ISOFIX child seat points in place for easy installation of your child car seats as well.

There is plenty of legroom and knee room for two tall adults to sit comfortably behind a tall driver.

Unlike many modern cars that have "sloping" rooflines that ruin headroom, the i30 stays quite flat.

Which means even your tallest friends won't be bumping their heads, and there is plenty of shoulder room if you need to fit three children across the back seat as well.
