Who Makes Skoda Cars?

In the last decade, few brands have undergone as much success as Skoda. Their range of affordable and reliable vehicles has led to them being one of the most profitable companies in the automotive industry. While they’re certainly a well-known company, many people don’t know an awful lot about the history of Skoda cars and who makes them. So, we thought we’d fill you in with some information on this brand.

Laurin & Klement

Back in 1895, two men called Vaclav Laurin and Vaclav Klement created a company called Laurin & Klement. They made cars from 1905 to 1925, and this was the birth of what we know as Skoda today. The company was based in the Czech Republic, which is where Skoda headquarters remain to this very day.

They released their first car in 1905 - the Voiturette A, which sold very well until 1907.

Acquired by Skoda Works

In 1925, Laurin & Klement was acquired by Skoda Works - a now defunct industrial conglomerate. They renamed the brand Skoda Auto, and so Skoda cars were born!

The first car with Skoda in its name was released and sold between 1925 and 1928, it was called the L&K Skoda 110. Then, in 1929, the very first Skoda was released; the Skoda 860. The company has been churning out iconic and unique cars ever since.

Part of The Volkswagen Group

In 1991, the owners of Skoda agreed to a partnership agreement with Volkswagen. They were the fourth different brand that VW now owned a part of, and became a wholly owned subsidiary at the turn of the millennium.

Many people credit this as one of the reasons Skoda burst into life in the auto industry. The perception of the brand changed, and more and more people started buying their cars and rating them very highly.

A Company That Does Things Differently

The key thing that stands out about Skoda is that they like to be different. This is evident when you look at the design of the new Skoda SUV; it’s like nothing else out there. They want their vehicles to be unique and to stand out from the crowd.
