Skoda Adverts: The Top Five Weird and Wonderful

Skoda has put out some quirky adverts over the years, from the oddly funny to the outrageous. Here are our top five.

SKODA Yeti Advert - Pimp my ride with Xzibit

1. One of the carmaker's best has got to be its spoof of US rapper Xzibit's TV series, Pimp My Ride. A less-than-enviable old vehicle is driven to Xzibit's garage, where he proceeds to tear it apart piece by piece. Right up until the end, you really don't quite understand what's going on, but it works. The ad, like many by Skoda, doesn't spend a huge amount of time dwelling on the features of the car, but it certainly gets itself noticed.

SKODA Fabia Advert - Original Cake Car

2. Probably the best known of all Skoda's adverts is the classic Fabia cake advert, in which the Skoda team really do make an entire, full-size Skoda Fabia out of cake. Just short of two hundred eggs, 100 bags of sugar and a huge amount of time went into the advert, with great results. We would like to know who ended up eating the Fabia, and how long it took. This ad also took on a 'mean' twist when the marque remade it for their Fabia vRS line.

SKODA Octavia vRS Advert - Not your average family car

3. Skoda waded deep into weirdness with an elaborate Octavia vRS advert that revolves around the tagline, "Not your average family car". It is a beautifully put together advert that deserves a watch, even if you only see one of these ads. The props themselves are worthy of praise – from a seven-pronged jackhammer to a barbecue that looks like it's capable of going into orbit – but possibly the best moment is a man walking his giant dog staring in disbelief at Skoda's new car in its rear-view mirror.

4. The brand comes up with plenty of brilliant TV adverts, but their print pieces are often excellent as well. "CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS – LEFT FOR INDIA AND DISCOVERED AMERICA" reads one. The advert is a full-page portrait of the great explorer with, underneath, a simple message from Skoda: "When you get lost, you're not always that lucky." Few car makers have drawn attention to new products (in this case a satellite navigation system) by taking the world's most famous explorer down a peg.
