Is a VW Transporter a commercial vehicle?

If you’re on the lookout for a new van, you may be searching for a vehicle that covers every base. The Volkswagen Transporter is advertised by the manufacturer as being ‘perfect for cargo and crew,’ but does that mean that it’s a commercial vehicle, and how does its classification impact you as a vehicle owner? If you’re thinking of investing in a Transporter or a VW Kombi, here’s a useful guide to help you understand tax implications for the popular Transporter model.

Person Loading Volkswagen Transporter

The Volkswagen Transporter Panel Van is one of the most popular models in the VW van range, and it’s not difficult to see why. This van is widely regarded as one of the most impressive workhorses out there, offering durability and space at the same time as a raft of innovative features that enhance the driving experience for workers and business owners on the go. One question people often have about the Transporter is whether or not it counts as a commercial vehicle. The answer to this question has implications for tax purposes, and it’s therefore important to ensure you understand exactly what the classification means before you buy.

The Transporter is a very popular choice for businesses and those who plan to buy a van for work purposes, but it’s also touted as a versatile vehicle by VW. The role of the vehicle plays a part in determining taxes and benefits. If the van is used solely for business purposes, it will be categorised as a commercial vehicle. If, however, the vehicle is used for private leisure purposes, it is classified as a car when considering benefit in kind (BIK) regulations. Benefit in kind is a term often used to describe company cars. HMRC views BIK as an additional pay bonus, which may mean that you have to pay tax on it, as well as on your salary.

It is worth noting that even if a VW Transporter Kombi is classified as a car for BIK purposes, it will still be defined as a van in terms of road tax, or VED (vehicle excise duty). Currently, this means that Transporter van owners would pay road tax of £250 in the first year.

The benefits of buying a Transporter

The Volkswagen Transporter is one of the most sought-after vans on the market, and it’s no surprise. This model covers all bases, providing substantial load space teamed with all the mod cons you could possibly need for a pleasant, comfortable ride. Suited to daily use and built to last, this robust, modern vehicle delivers reliability as well as comfort, safety and a range of useful gadgets and extras to make life on the go easier and more enjoyable.

If you have any questions about the classification of the Transporter, or you’re keen to find out more about this model before you make a decision about which van to buy, we’d be happy to help.
