Audi Engine Oil Consumption – What’s Normal?

Audi Engine Oil Consumption – What’s Normal?

A certain level of engine oil consumption is normal in all Audi engines. Audi states that consumption of up to 0.5 litres per 1,000 km (around 620 miles) can be considered within specification.

However, actual oil usage can vary depending on driving conditions, vehicle age, and maintenance history.

Common factors that can increase oil consumption include:

  • Driving style and high engine loads
  • Short journey driving (cold engine operation)
  • High mileage and general engine wear
  • Irregular or missed servicing
  • Low oil or coolant levels
  • Engine overheating
  • Poor quality or incorrect repairs
  • Performance tuning or modifications
  • Oil type or specification used

The Correct Engine Oil for Audi Vehicles

Audi works closely with Castrol to develop engine oils designed to optimise performance, efficiency, and emissions.

The recommended oil for many Audi models is:

Castrol EDGE Professional LongLife III 5W-30

This oil is engineered to:

  • Reduce friction and metal-to-metal contact
  • Maintain engine performance between service intervals
  • Support fuel efficiency
  • Help reduce emissions through cleaner operation

However, oil requirements can vary by model and engine type. Always refer to your owner’s manual or contact a qualified Audi technician for exact specifications.

Topping Up Your Audi Engine Oil

When topping up engine oil, it is important not to overfill the engine, as this can cause serious mechanical damage.

To check your oil level:

  • Park on level ground
  • Switch off the engine and allow it to cool
  • Use the dipstick or digital oil level display (if fitted)
  • Ensure the level is between minimum and maximum markers

If oil needs to be added, top up gradually and recheck the level.

If Your Audi Is Using Too Much Oil

If you notice higher-than-normal oil consumption, it is recommended to have the vehicle inspected.

At Sinclair Audi, our technicians can:

  • Measure engine oil consumption accurately
  • Identify any underlying mechanical issues
  • Check for leaks or wear-related causes
  • Recommend appropriate repairs if needed
