MOTABILITY FAQS

MOTABILITY FAQS

Here are the answers to some of the questions that we’re frequently asked. However if there is something else you want to ask or need to know, please feel free to contact one of the Motability specialists at your local Sinclair Retailer and it will be our pleasure to assist you.

JOINING THE SCHEME

To join the Motability Scheme, you must be in receipt of one of the following allowances:

  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP).

When you apply, you will also need to have at least 12 months remaining on your allowance.

You simply exchange all or part of your Motability allowance to lease your preferred vehicle over three years. At the end of the lease, if you want to remain on the Scheme, you just hand your car back, choose a brand new one and start again under a new lease arrangement.

If you don’t use all of your allowance, you will receive the difference back to use as you wish.

You can also choose to lease a vehicle that costs more than your allowance by simply making an Advance Payment which varies by model.

Apart from fuel, everything you need to take delivery of a new car every three years is provided by the Scheme:

  • Servicing and maintenance
  • Full RAC breakdown assistance
  • Annual car tax
  • Windscreen and tyre replacement
  • A wide choice of adaptations, including many at no extra cost if installed when your lease commences
  • Insurance for you and up to two additional named drivers
  • 60,000 mileage allowance over the full lease term

As Motability Partners, we’ve got a long and proud association with the Scheme and have looked after the mobility requirements of hundreds of Motability customers.

From the moment of your enquiry to the delivery of your car and throughout your lease term, you can be assured that you will be in very safe hands.

  • Dedicated Motability specialists in every Retailer
  • Easy access at every site including disabled parking spaces near to entrances plus disabled toilets and facilities such as ramps, wide-opening doors and lifts in many locations
  • An extensive range of cars from some of the world’s most prestigious brands for you to peruse and test drive
  • Vehicle adaptations to suit your needs – many available at no cost
  • Ongoing support, advice and assistance throughout your lease as a matter of course

PERSONAL INDEPENDENCE PAYMENT (PIP)

PIP is a new allowance that was introduced in 2013 to gradually replace Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for disabled people aged between 16 and 64. This phasing-in period is expected to be completed in 2019.

The Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of PIP can be used to lease a car through Motability in a similar way to the Higher Rate Mobility Component of DLA.

If you are aged 16 to 64, you may be entitled to PIP if you have a daily living and/or mobility needs and require extra help because of an illness, disability or mental health condition. The DWP makes the decision about the amount of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) you get and for how long. PIP is made up of 2 components called daily living and mobility, and each can be paid at either a standard or enhanced rate.

PIP rates (as of April 2018)

Component

Weekly rate

Daily living – standard rate

£58.70

Daily living – enhanced rate

£87.65

Mobility – standard rate

£23.20

Mobility – enhanced rate

£61.20

If you are in receipt of the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of PIP (currently £61.20 per week) you are eligible to lease a vehicle on the Scheme.

If you receive DLA, you will be invited to make a claim for PIP by the DWP.

You do not need to do anything until you are contacted. Once you receive the letter though, it is important to respond to the invitation within the given timescales.

ALREADY A MOTABILITY CUSTOMER

Motability leases generally run for three years and it is at this point that you return your current vehicle and drive away a new one.
The process starts approximately three months before the end of your lease when you will be contacted to remind you that it is time to start looking for your next car.

Should your mobility needs change during the lease then this may be possible but will need to be reviewed on an individual basis. Administration fees may also be incurred and you will also forego the Good Condition Bonus that may be payable on the vehicle.
If you wish to keep your car longer, this can be arranged but will be dependent on your mileage and will need to be agreed by Motability.

All of your servicing, maintenance and repairs are covered as part of your Motability lease so you have nothing to worry about.
Servicing intervals vary depending on the make and model of your vehicle. You should have received documentation relating to this when you collected your car but, if you have any queries, please contacting your Sinclair Retailer.
Replacement tyres and windscreens are also provided as part of the Scheme and, subject to fair wear and tear, at no cost to you.

Full breakdown support is provided on your Motability car through RAC Motability Assist who can be contacted on 0800 73 111 73.

ADAPTATIONS

Your Motability lease includes insurance for up to two drivers - yourself, friends, relatives or carers. You can also add a third driver for an additional cost.

All drivers must have a valid driving licence, whilst those with a non-UK licence, will be subject to additional checks.

Only drivers listed on the Certificate of Motor Insurance are insured on the policy.

Yes but this needs to be done through RSA Motability, the Scheme’s insurers.
