Sandcastle Waterpark, Lancashire

The award-winning venue offers facilities that have been carefully designed to give you the best possible day. Equipped with pool-accessible wheelchairs to hire, an autism-friendly quite room as well as accessible family sessions the Sandcastle Waterpark in Lancashire is a fantastic inclusive family fun day out! The park is filled with flumes, a wave machine and exciting slides that are accessible to most visitors.

Bwlch Nant yr Arian Forest, Mid Wales

Bwlch Nant yr Arian Forest offers magnificent views as well as a comprehensive list of outdoor activities to suit all visitors. Not only is this a spectacular destination, it provides plenty of accessibility features. 

The Barcud Trail, which skirts around the edge of the lake, is suitable for wheelchairs as there are no steps or stiles and the gradient is 10% or less with resting bays on uphill sections. 

Other facilities include:

  • parking for Blue Badge holders
  • wheelchair access to the visitor centre and café
  • accessible toilets
  • facilities for the hearing impaired in café
  • courtesy wheelchair

Canalboating with the Lyneal Trust, Shropshire

The Shropshire Lady is unique on the waterways of Britain, if not the world.  She has been designed with the assistance of professional physiotherapists and with the needs of our customers in mind, has thoughtful adaptions including an improved wheelchair lift, adapted WC and a consistent corridor from stern to bow which will accommodate wheelchairs of up to 28” (71cms) width. Her interior colour scheme has been chosen to help those who are partially sighted.

At the rear is a spacious deck, reached by a ramp from the shore with access  to the saloon by hydraulic lift (maximum capacity of wheelchair and user is 200 kgs) or by the use of steps instead of the lift, dependent on the needs of the passenger.

Groomsport Beach, County Down, Northern Ireland

Groomsport has one of Northern Ireland's few fully accessible beaches for all ages and abilities, made operational by the Mae Murray Foundation. 

The beach now features an array of specialist mobility equipment including; new Hippocampe all-terrain wheelchairs can move easily over sand and offer support to both adults and children, and are available to pre-book for free of charge. Walking frames suited for beach use as well as temporary beach matting and a supported beach buggy for infants. The toilet's have also had an innkeeping upgrade with a new accessible toilet facilities that includes a ‘Changing Places’ toilet which offers both hoisting and adult-sized changing bench resources.

Working with accessibility groups when designing the visitor experience, Stonehenge meets a lot of different accessibility requirements to ensure all visitors have a fantastic experience. So much so that in 2019, UK Age Mobility voted Stonehenge the most accessible heritage site in the UK based on ratings from TripAdvisor.

Their website lists a host of facilities, some that may require booking in advance. Catering for a wide range of mobility, hearing, visual and learning requirements by having features in place such as; tarmac and grass paths,  accessible toilets, step-free bus service, audio descriptive tours, large print guides, audio tour transcripts and easy read guides.

The fairytale farm has been designed to put those with additional requirements first, the owners have a daughter with cerebral palsy and know what matters when taking into account sensory, learning and physical disabilities.

Imaginative, inclusive and interactive play areas stimulate the senses, whilst ponies, pigs, donkeys and alpacas provide a fantastic day out for all the family.

The seventh edition of this inspirational guide, which is free to download or view online, is packed with ideas for brilliant days out and features more than 200 attractions from art galleries to adrenaline-fuelled activities – all of which are accessible to visitors whatever their disability.

Each review is written by someone who either has a disability or visited the location with a disabled friend or family member so it provides a detailed overview of the attraction itself, including access and parking as well as the important facilities on offer such as refreshments and toilets.

There are 13 recommended venues across Wales within the Guide from Celtic Quest Coasteering at Abereiddy Bay, St Davids, to the Garwnant Forest Visitor Centre in the Brecon Beacons National Park. From the Scottish Highlands to the Cornish coast, there are dozens more Great British places that the Guide suggests are well worth a visit, so what better way to enjoy yourself and your Sinclair Motability car!
