First launched in 2010, it brings you a high level of luxury and quality - that Audi is known for - into a small, city-friendly package that many honestly crave - with over 1 million cars sold alone in Europe since 2010.

Body Type

It's available as a five-door hatchback - known as the Sportback - and comes with a range of efficient petrol engines, with the latest models featuring a very bold design with sharp lines and a very sporty look.

Brief History of the Audi A1

The Audi A1 was first introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010 to compete against smaller Alfa Romeo's and other cars such as the Peugeot 208, Vauxhall Corsa, Renault Clio, and Honda Jazz.

As the smallest model in Audi's lineup, it was initially created to bring the brand's premium quality to the Supermini class.

The first generation of the A1 was available as a three-door hatchback and was aimed at drivers who wanted that compact car without sacrificing luxury and performance while they did so.

In 2011, Audi then expanded the A1 range by launching the five-door Sportback version.

When we move to the side profile of the Audi A1, it is clear this section showcases a very dynamic and what we feel is a youthful appearance.

Sharp Character Lines

This is accomplished by its sharp character lines that run along the sides, creating that sense of motion, even when the car is stationary, that car designers strive to create.

Gentle Sloping Roofline

The gently sloping roofline then tapers towards the rear, giving you a very sporty silhouette on the whole.

Moving to the rear, we were very impressed with the Audi A1 here as it continues that great combination from the front where it combies really well, a high-level of both sportiness and style - at least we thought so anyway.

LED Headlights

The LED rear lights also mirror the sharp design of the front headlights and include those dynamic turn signals — a signature Audi feature which you will notice when you see it in action.

Tailgate

The tailgate also has a clean and uncluttered look, which can also be accented with a subtle roof spoiler that adds to the car's overall aerodynamic profile for sure.

Rear Bumper

The rear bumper is also moulded well into the bodywork, and it incorporates diffuser elements and contrasting trims really well.

Depending on the model you decide to buy, there may also be visible exhaust outlets that underscore the car's performance capabilities as well.

Now, this is something that needs its own section, as the colour options you have to choose from are huge.

There were also other bits, such as obvious attention to detail, such as the panels aligning really well - not something you see in all brands - all the way from the assertive front grille and sleek headlights to the dynamic sidelines and stylish wheels. All in all, we thought the Audi A1's design came across very polished.

Interior

Moving to the interior, we were also equally impressed, as it is clear that Audi has added several refined details to the Audi A1's interior, which we feel will really enhance your driving experience overall.

For instance, every internal design element we thought showcased a very remarkable attention to detail - from the 6.5” manually retractable TFT colour display to the optional luxurious leather seats you can choose from.

Consequently, we don't think it is a surprise that the A1 gives you a very premium interior feel that combines modern design with high-quality materials - making it stand out in the Supermini class.

The front seats are also designed for comfort and support, which are ideal for both city driving and longer journeys alike.

They also offer you plenty of adjustment options, including height and lumbar support - which will allow you to find your optimal seating position easily.

The seats are also well-cushioned and come with standard cloth upholstery, while higher trims can offer you other options like leather or Alcantara for an even more luxurious feel as well.

Rear Seats

Despite its compact size, the A1 really does give you a reasonable space in the rear seats.

For instance the five-door Sportback design really does improve your accessibility, making it easier for passengers to get in and out on the whole.

The rear seats will also comfortably accommodate two adults for short trips, though taller passengers might find legroom a bit tight on longer journeys.

Then the other thing we noticed is that the rear bench also features ISOFIX anchor points for securely fitting child seats as well.

Boot

For the boot, the Audi A1 offers you a lot of practical boot space of around 335 litres - which is impressive for a car of its size as, for instance, the BMW 1 series only has a boot space of 300 litres comparable.

The boot opening is also wide and low, making it very convenient to load and unload luggage or shopping bags as well.

For extra cargo space, the rear seats also fold down in a 60/40 split, expanding the capacity to accommodate much larger items like suitcases, trip runs, or sports equipment as well.

Infotainment System

A standout feature of the A1's interior is its advanced infotainment system, which we definitely noticed.

For instance, even the entry-level models come equipped with a high-resolution touchscreen display that is very responsive and integrated seamlessly into the dashboard.

On some of its higher trims, they also offer you an upgraded system with a larger screen and navigation, as well as Audi's Virtual Cockpit - a digital instrument cluster that provides you with customisable driving information directly in your line of sight while you are driving.

For the upholstery in the A1, this really does we feel reflects Audi's commitment to quality and that is clear when you feel it.

We found the overall cabin of the Audi A1 to be thoughtfully designed with a clear focus on the driver and then the passenger's comfort.

For instance, the layout is intuitive, with controls and buttons within easy reach, and high-quality materials cover most surfaces as well - including soft-touch plastics and metallic accents that enhance the premium feel.

Ambient interior lighting in select trim options can also add to the atmosphere very well, especially during nighttime driving.

Here, we found that the combination of practical features and luxury created a very comfortable environment for both you and your passengers.

Engine Options

For its engines, one thing that was clear is that the Audi A1 offers a large selection of efficient and responsive petrol engines designed to cater to various driving needs.

It is also clear that a good focus has been spent on getting both performance and fuel economy to align really well. Consequently, the engine lineup really does provide you with options suitable for both city commuting as well as more spirited track or motorway driving if needed as well.

Audi's FSI® Direct-injection technology, originally developed for the Le Mans 24-hour endurance race, we feel really does enhance both the power and torque available while improving your fuel efficiency at the same time.

For instance, it can do this by precisely injecting the right amount of fuel and air into the combustion chambers, allowing the engine to be able to "breathe more" efficiently.

This, in turn, reduces heat loss while also increasing your output, leading to around a -15% reduction in fuel consumption and significantly lower emissions by doing so which in turn reduces your running costs.

They have also advanced their TFSI® technology as well by incorporating turbocharging into it - adding an extra boost of power for you as well.

Here, you get the entry-level engine, which is a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit producing 95 horsepower (PS).

A slightly more powerful version of the 1.0-litre engine, this offers you 110 PS - referred to as the 30 TFSI.

Automatically shuts off the engine when the vehicle is stationary, reducing fuel consumption and emissions in traffic.

Diesel Engines

In 1989, Audi introduced TDI® to the roads, and since then, it has refined it with further innovations like common-rail technology.

This system then uses Piezo injectors controlled by an electrical charge to deliver the exact amount of fuel to the engine that you need.

The result is a much quieter operation and lower combustion temperatures for their diesel engines, all while they reduce your emissions while maintaining performance as well.

This advanced engine technology automatically shuts down two of the four cylinders when the engine is under lighter loads, such as cruising on motorways or in city traffic.

As a result, you get a high level of fuel efficiency and low emissions.

However, when you need it, the full power of TFSI® — with its combination of turbocharging and direct petrol injection — is instantly available, giving you a very responsive driving experience on the whole.

Recuperation System

Normally, when a vehicle brakes, the kinetic energy is lost as heat, but the Audi A1's recuperation system changes that.

This system instead converts the kinetic energy produced during coasting - or braking - into useful electrical energy.

By increasing the alternator's voltage during these moments, the energy is stored in the battery.
