Here are the answers to some of the questions that we’re frequently asked. However if there is something else you want to ask or need to know, please feel free to contact one of the Motability specialists at your local Sinclair Retailer and it will be our pleasure to assist you.

Q: Who is eligible?

A: To join the Motability Scheme, you must be in receipt of one of the following allowances:

  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP).

When you apply, you will also need to have at least 12 months remaining on your allowance.

Q: How does the Scheme work?

A: You simply exchange all or part of your Motability allowance to lease your preferred vehicle over three years. At the end of the lease, if you want to remain on the Scheme, you just hand your car back, choose a brand new one and start again under a new lease arrangement.

If you don’t use all of your allowance, you will receive the difference back to use as you wish.

You can also choose to lease a vehicle that costs more than your allowance by simply making an Advance Payment which varies by model.

Q: What is included?

A: Apart from fuel, everything you need to take delivery of a new car every three years is provided by the Scheme:

  • Servicing and maintenance
  • Full RAC breakdown assistance
  • Annual car tax
  • Windscreen and tyre replacement
  • A wide choice of adaptations, including many at no extra cost if installed when your lease commences
  • Insurance for you and up to two additional named drivers
  • 60,000 mileage allowance over the full lease term

Q: What is it?

A: PIP is a new allowance that was introduced in 2013 to gradually replace Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for disabled people aged between 16 and 64. This phasing-in period is expected to be completed in 2019.

The Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of PIP can be used to lease a car through Motability in a similar way to the Higher Rate Mobility Component of DLA.

Q: Can I get PIP?

A: If you are aged 16 to 64, you may be entitled to PIP if you have a daily living and/or mobility needs and require extra help because of an illness, disability or mental health condition. The DWP makes the decision about the amount of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) you get and for how long. PIP is made up of 2 components called daily living and mobility, and each can be paid at either a standard or enhanced rate.

Q: How much can I receive?

A: PIP rates (as of April 2018)

Weekly rate

Daily living – standard rate

Daily living – enhanced rate

Mobility – standard rate

Mobility – enhanced rate

If you are in receipt of the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of PIP (currently £61.20 per week) you are eligible to lease a vehicle on the Scheme.

Q: How do I claim?

If you receive DLA, you will be invited to make a claim for PIP by the DWP.

You do not need to do anything until you are contacted. Once you receive the letter though, it is important to respond to the invitation within the given timescales.

Q: When can I change my car?

A: Motability leases generally run for three years and it is at this point that you return your current vehicle and drive away a new one.
The process starts approximately three months before the end of your lease when you will be contacted to remind you that it is time to start looking for your next car.

Q: Can I end my lease early or extend it?

A: Should your mobility needs change during the lease then this may be possible but will need to be reviewed on an individual basis. Administration fees may also be incurred and you will also forego the Good Condition Bonus that may be payable on the vehicle.
If you wish to keep your car longer, this can be arranged but will be dependent on your mileage and will need to be agreed by Motability.

Q: How do I keep my car maintained?

A: All of your servicing, maintenance and repairs are covered as part of your Motability lease so you have nothing to worry about.
Servicing intervals vary depending on the make and model of your vehicle. You should have received documentation relating to this when you collected your car but, if you have any queries, please contacting your Sinclair Retailer.
Replacement tyres and windscreens are also provided as part of the Scheme and, subject to fair wear and tear, at no cost to you.

Q: What happens if I breakdown?

Full breakdown support is provided on your Motability car through RAC Motability Assist who can be contacted on 0800 73 111 73.

Q: What adaptations are available?

A: Adaptations are divided into three categories – driving controls, stowage and seating and access.
There is a wide range of adaptations available to enhance your motoring experience and you’ll be delighted to discover that many can be fitted at no cost if this work is undertaken at the start of your lease.
Please talk to your Sinclair Motability Specialist about your mobility requirements and they will be able to advise on the adaptations that are available.

Q: How much do adaptations cost?

A: Many of the most popular adaptations can be supplied and installed free-of-charge if arranged when placing your vehicle order. However you are likely to incur costs if you decide on adaptations once you’ve collected the keys to your car and your lease is underway.

Q: Can adaptations be added during my lease?

A: This may be possible but you will need to get the go-ahead from Motability and the Motabilty insurers first. You will also need to use an approved Motability installer and pay the cost yourself.

Q: Who is insured?

A: Your Motability lease includes insurance for up to two drivers - yourself, friends, relatives or carers. You can also add a third driver for an additional cost.

All drivers must have a valid driving licence, whilst those with a non-UK licence, will be subject to additional checks.

Only drivers listed on the Certificate of Motor Insurance are insured on the policy.

Q: Can I change the drivers on the policy?

A: Yes but this needs to be done through RSA Motability, the Scheme’s insurers.
